If you can succeed in staying the course, the rewards can be substantial.

1. Always make sure to think long term
Many online entrepreneurs fail because they neglect to think about the long term. There’s not a business on the planet, online or otherwise, where money can be made instantly. Maybe folks who believe those scam emails will disagree, but people with real business sense know this to be true. If you’re planning on building an online business with shareware and blogging, don’t expect to get rich in the first month. There’s a period of time that’s required in order to gain contacts, referrals, and the quality resources that allow a business to be successful. Short term business ideas are shoddy. The savvy online businessman is thinking five years down the road, not five weeks (or even five months) down the road.

2. Optimize your efficiency
A lot of things go into making an online business successful. Each and every day, there will be things that occur in your business that you have no control over. What is important are the things that you can change. Much of what goes on with your website will be handled by a machine. When someone loads your site, that’s a process that’s handled by a machine. Their clicking on an ad is a process that they control, but the actual act is controlled by a machine.

Small tweaks to how your website looks or how it runs can lead to big gains in advertising revenue. You can’t control everything that goes on, but it’s essential that you control those things which are under your watch. Learning how to “fix the machine” is an essential ability to have, and will take you great places if you master it.

3. Google Adsense optimization
If you are looking to gain income through Google’s Adsense program, there is plenty of advice available on the web to help you make that process more efficient. By researching and applying some of these principles, your online business can benefit greatly. Certain small cosmetic changes, such as altering the color of your ads or their location, can lead to big gains in ad revenue. These changes don’t take long to implement and you will be surprised how great an impact they can have. Adsense isn’t the only option for displaying PPC ads, but it’s one of the more well known ones.

4. Search engine optimization techniques
In order to run a successful online business, you better have a high search engine ranking. There’s only so much marketing that can be done by word of mouth or personal promotion. The majority of your traffic is going to eventually come from the average search engine user. Produce quality content for your website so that search engines will pick it up. If you don’t feel comfortable producing SEO quality web content, then have a professional freelance writer do it for you. This work can often be found at pretty cheap rates and the benefits are substantial.

5. It’s up to you to market your business
If you can’t sell your website and business to the public, who can? No one knows what you have to offer better than you do. Simply writing blog posts is not enough to bring people into your website. It takes a real life marketing approach. If you aren’t a skilled marketer, you better have someone on your team who is.

Marketing isn’t even about the money you spend, either. It’s about getting the word out. It’s probably not a good idea to buy advertising space to begin with. You can get equal exposure by participating in link exchanges with other websites in your field and by posting on related blogs. Be liberal in letting people know about your website. If this is a problem for you, then maybe you aren’t passionate enough about your business. That would be a much larger problem.

6. Make a newsletter
Online businesses can only succeed if they can follow up with their customers. By having a newsletter and a mailing list of former and potential customers, you have an instant avenue that promotes communication between you and your valued customers. This is one of the best ways to promote repeat business, get the word out about new products or services, and boost your page hits in the process. But you also have to be careful with it. Make sure to have an unsubscribe link, and never send it to people by dafault…make sure you get their permission first or you may just end up pissing them off.

7. Don’t be afraid to promote your business offline
Just because you’re an online business doesn’t mean that you have to promote your business specifically on the internet. Promotional flyers can be cheap to mass produce and give you an opportunity to reach a different demographic. Realize that many of your potential customers don’t spend every hour of the day on their computer. If you market to them, they will find a computer in order to access your website and learn about your business.

8. Offer something of quality
If this list was designed based upon the importance of each tip, this one would be on the top. Your online business will only be successful if there is some service or product that is of high quality. It doesn’t matter how many people come to your website if the services provided are shoddy. They won’t stick around in that case. Your product or service is the best representation of your business that a customer can see. Make sure it’s something you’d be proud to offer anyone – even your mother.

9. Be willing to adapt your business ideas
If you are going to be in business for the long haul, be prepared to alter your business plan if necessary. Business in general is a highly volatile thing that is always changing. The change is even greater on the internet, where news and ideas can be exchanged in mere seconds. If you hear of an idea that can help your business to grow, don’t be afraid to learn more about it and eventually implement it. Being among the first companies to implement a certain marketing technique or other idea can be a very beneficial thing; but as with other tips you need to be cautious with this one as well…jumping in head first without doing the research on a new technique could destroy you if that technique happens to flop later on.

10. Keep them coming back for more
Getting visitors to come to your website is only half of the battle. You’ve got to have something to keep them coming back for more. Ideally, your services and products will be enough to accomplish this task. If they aren’t, then other things such as contests, downloads, and interesting content can do the trick.

Hopefully you’ve learned bit about how to be successful in Online Business. By no means is this an all-encompassing list, or even a super great list for that matter. This is meant only to provide you with a basic foundation for what you need to do. I could sit here and tell you step by step how to accomplish each of these steps…but that would take entirely too long…and you wouldn’t learn it as well as you will doing it yourself.
