Four Thing You Should Know About Selecting a Bareboat Charter

By: Alan Mills

1/ To Sail or not to Sail The first question to ask is do I want the added adventure of sailing or the comfort of cruising? Here are some questions you should answer

Do I like roughing it or more creature comforts?

Do I get more out of the trip or goal

Communal living is good or private room thanks

sleeping under the stars or who took the chocolate of my pillow

If your all about the first alternative you would be OK on a sail boat. If the second alternative is more you, go got the motor cruiser. If your a bit of both it may swing on how long you intend to be on the charter but I would lean toward the motor cruiser.

2/What will the make up of the crew The crew is another big concern. Family, and close friends that you have lived with in previous constricted environments and still walked out friends are a safe choice. No mater what vessel you charter none are as big as your home and they get smaller on bad weather days if you get a few, especially the sail boats.

3/ What Type of Vessel

The most spacious you can pay for

The most recently built you can pay for

The most well appointed you can pay for

Built with facilities and services suited to the particular needs of bareboat charter

Do it All Yourself or Get Some Help Many boat hire companies will have people available to skipper the boat for you ad an added cost. I would suggest if you are uncertain of your capabilities you may want to explore this option you may only need someone for a day to make you feel comfortable. Having said that it has been my experience that this is rarely need in the case of a motor cruiser but more common for a novice sailer. Many sail boat charter companies have made it mandatory for at least one person on board to have passed a learn to sail course. At any rate your appointed captain should

Have good eyesight

Be attentive to other vessels on the water

Be sober while in control of the vessel

Be patient and not easily flustered

The word is full of great places to charter a sailing or cruising yacht from the Bahamas to the Greek Islands my favorite place is The Whitsunday Islands of the coast of North Queensland Australia. These days my preferred mode of transport on the water is a motor cruiser. I have had many great days sailing but I do like a few creature comforts if I am out overnight, especially with a few friends. I hope this little article will help yo make the right decision for you. All the best
