Is Life Over After Bankruptcy?

By: Don McKay

Today credit is used by billions of people. It is one of the largest industries in the world. Many find themselves in debt and credit card debt can be the hardest debt to get out of. What can you do to reduce credit card debt? There are several ways to eliminate the debt. 1. Get a consolidation loan. This can be a fixed rate loan that pays off all of your credit cards. You make one payment and the credit cards are paid off. 2. Cut your cards in half and burn them. This will allow you to not spend anymore, and help you get your debt down. 3. Take on a second job just to pay off the cards. That may not be realistic to many people. 4. Then there is the dreaded Bankruptcy. The laws have changed over the years, but if you have found yourself filing bankruptcy well I have good news your life is not over.

After Bankruptcy the first thing you must do is realize the mess you were in, so you don't go back to it again. Then you need to reestablish your credit. How? There are ways to get back on track, but they will cost you. You can apply for secured credit cards and auto loans. Here is the catch. You will pay a higher interest rate much higher than you used to. In many cases if you reestablish some form of credit you can apply for a home loan after 2 years. The reason for the high interest rates and lack of loan consideration is because after Bankruptcy you are now a risk. The key is to show creditors that you made a mistake. A mistake you have no intention of repeating.

Pay your bills on time and only take on what you can handle. Remember you just filed Bankruptcy, and you can't do it again for 2 years. I have heard of people who have filed up to 4 times in a 10-year period. They always seem to do ok for about a year then they are back in trouble again. Break your spending cycle now. Only take on what you can handle. Then you will see in a few years you will be back on track.
