Newer Vending Machines and Higher Sales

By: Robert Farnham

There are many elements to consider in the vending machine business so that you can be successful. One area of controversy has to do with the look of the vending machine and the relationship it has on price. I have been curious about it and from my own observations I didn't see that it was the main indicator that people were looking for. Of course I didn't do any real research but I am a people watcher.

That got me to thinking about the attractiveness of a vending machine. It seems like it really does influence sales, especially when there are many of them in the same area. People tend to gravitate towards those that are colorful and even that dispense products in a way that you can see the process through the front of the machine.

When there are many vending machines in a given area it does seem like people go to the pretty ones. For example at our local Wal-Mart there must be at least eight of them that sale soda and water when you walk in the door. They have a new one where the soda that is on the front of it is in 3-D so it changes from a closed can to one that is open and refreshing. This is a type of advertising that is getting more sales for that vending machine than those plain ones next to it.

You can be sure these newer looking vending machines will start to crop up all over the place. They are likely being sold as a way to get more sales. Yet you need to be very cautious about falling for this line of talk. There may not be such a connection between the look of a vending machine and the volume of sales. You could just end up spending more money on your equipment going this route.

As a result you may end up struggling to make the kind of profits you need to be successful. If you look at another spin on this, you could now get other models of vending machines for less money. That will increase your profits and that may be the right road for you to take with this type of business.

It comes down to being your decision but don't let the look of it be the only influence of your decision. It could be one you end up regretting in the near future. When you are evaluating the locations to place your vending machines you may want to take a look at what your competition will be. It is best to get a good location where no other vending machines are at. Yet this may not be possible and you can't control someone else wanting to place theirs next to yours later on either.

You definitely want to have vending machines that look nice. However, you need to balance that with the cost of them, how well the operate, and what consumers are interested in. To be honest with you most consumers don't really care what a vending machine looks like. They just want to be able to grab a cold drink or a snack and move on to the next thing in their day.

With this in mind, do keep your vending machines looking nice. Replace what has been broken such as the covers. Put in new light bulbs when those inside of it wear out. Yet save your money and don't buy a fancy looking vending machine. It is only going to increase your overhead for this type of business.
