Nikon Digital Camera Reviews - Coolpix S550

By: janet ashby

Nikon recently launched the Nikon Coolpix S550, advertised as a "stylish new camera that elegantly packs high performance and advanced functions into the smallest body in its class". Let's take a look at the features and see if performance has been sacrificed to achieve this!

New Features Unique to the Nikon Coolpix S550

1. A gauge is displayed in smile mode to alert you when your subject smiles. Great idea to allow you to capture the perfect image!

2. A blink warning detects when your subject blinks and allows you to repeat the shot instantly.

Image Innovations Unique to Nikon

1. Improved Face-priority AF

2. Red-Eye Fix In-camera

3. D-Lighting. With this function enabled the lighting can be adjusted automatically for underexposure due to poor back lighting or the contrast corrected for overexposure.

Other Features

Don't worry about 'shaking hands'. The vibration reduction feature will compensate and under low lighting conditions is very useful. The Nikon Coolpix S550 has a light sensitivity range of up to ISO 2000 so is ideal for operating in lower light conditions or for shooting targets on the move. The manual and automatic settings give you full control. The monitor is a large 2.5-inch and the displays have been greatly improved with plenty of feedback assistance and clearly identifiable icons. The camera comes in a choice of Silver, Black, Blue, or Purple. You'll get around 200 shots per battery.

* Smoother zooming for close-ups with the active zoom function

* Easy setting of multiple locations with the time zone function

* Time-lapse movie mode with sound

* SD memory card with 50 MB of memory

* Compatible with SDHC cards

* USB connectivity

* Macro shooting from 10 cm

* PictBridge support

Conclusion

For someone who takes a lot of portrait shots the smile mode and blink function are particularly useful! A nice array of new and improved features and specifications but priced at around $US220 it isn't the cheapest camera in its class. The new features and small size might appeal to the discerning photographer!
