Prepare for travel by setting up a study space

By: Jake Solochek

Look for a Location to Learn

Finding a time and place to do your homework and study is important, whether you are in a rainforest in Peru or on a farm in Belize.  Once you have decided when to do your homework, the next question is where to do it.

A good study space should have a table big enough to lay out books, notes, worksheets, etc. without them touching each other.  You do not want disorder, but you need enough room to study.

Do you have enough light?   You could sit near a window with an overhead light and a reading lamp.  If you are in a sunny climate, like Fort Lauderdale, you might be tempted to sit outside...but that wouldn't be helpful. Even if you have a home in paradise, there can still be things to keep you from your purpose.

You need to find a place that is free of distractions.  No TV on in the room, no siblings playing nearby, no phone calls to overhear, and no instant computer work like instant messages or emails to keep you distracted.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket With the extra time you will save, you can start studying how to use a professional camera.
It's your choice about music -- you can listen to music while you study if it helps you. You might ignore phone calls, or turn off your cell phone, and forget about the desire to eat every every ten or fifteen minutes.

You might find this study space in the kitchen or dining room table, or in your bedroom.  You could create a study space in your basement or an office in your home.  Some people find their homes too distracting, and so they study in a local library. Be sure not to look at web sites that can discuss subjects that might make your mind wander. You might be on the road or you might be studying to improve your fortunes, but you will find more success when you have a stable routine.

Try to study in that same place daily.  Your mind will get used to being attentive in this place.  When you enter this area, it is time to get to work. Your pens, pencils, calculator, laptop, paper, erasers, stapler, and other things that you use often can be kept nearby.  Also, you can store them in a box that can be pulled out whenever you need them.  You won't have to stop studying to get your supplies.

This special study spot will help you get to work, finish your studies and leave time for packing, so you can go traveling! You could even learn another language or give free lessons teaching someone English. And it all starts with organization.
