The Advantages Of A Bill Of Sale Form

By: Tony Potter

When purchasing or trading a second-hand car, it is wise to obtain an auto bill of sale form. For the seller, a bill of sale is useful as it is a written record that the cars title has been legally transferred to new owner. For the purchaser, an bill of sale form is a record that the purchase of the automobile did in fact occur. There are a couple of things that each bill of sale form should contain. The names and addresses of both the buyer and the seller, a description of the automobile as well as the sale price should all be documented.

Almost every state requires a bill of sale form to be provided before registering any newly purchased automobile. The main reason this is required is to document the vehicle purchase price for tax assessment as well as to record the odometer reading, which is used to prevent odometer fraud.

An auto bill of sale form that fails to provide all the stated information will most likely not be accepted and the vehicle will not be able to be registered.

Even though there may be one or two states that do not require a bill of sale form in order to complete your vehicle registration, purchasers of used cars are still recommended to fill in such a form for their own protection and peace of mind.

Completing a bill of sale form will take only moments but will help the buyer feel secure about their vehicle purchase and the money they have spent.
