The Real World: Hollywood in Harmony with Nature

Even reality television producers can have a conscience and think of the planet, as MTV proves in the 20th season of its series, The Real World. The cast for this incarnation of the show will be living in an energy-efficient home that follows sustainable practices, which will be located in the moviemaking realm of Hollywood, Los Angeles. They have stated that within the house, people can expect to find tools and features that would make any Greenpeace member spasm happily with environmental approval. Among these are bamboo flooring, solar energy solutions, recycled vintage décor and sustainable furniture, plus recycled glass counters.

Also part of the house’s Earth-friendly luxuries is a solar-heated swimming pool, energy star appliances, and energy-efficient lighting. The show’s head honchos have also claimed that various production methods have likewise been tweaked to help reduce waste and combat pollution. Carbon neutrality is a goal of Bunim-Murray Productions, as they adopt carbon-reducing techniques as well as providing products to the cast and household which are ecologically safer. MTV says that it intends to set an example for its younger viewers, and wants to try teaching them about the various lifestyle changes and choices they can make in order to help the environment.

According to Christina Norman, the president of MTV, The Real World has long been associated with the issues facing different generations of MTV viewers. With ongoing changes in the worldwide climate and environment, such as the dangers of global warming and pollution, Norman said that young people are gradually getting smarter. She believes that MTV fans just need a little prodding, good example and encouragement in order to come to the realization that the decisions they make in their everyday lives, can actually affect the future of the world they live in. Applying that to pop culture such as The Real World is arguably a step in the right direction.
