The story of Murcia City

The past of Murcia has been a absorbing tradition of agriculture, trade and ATTACKS. early history (500+ B.C.) Murcia's earliest population - Iberian tribes - had clearly established commercial relationships with the Phoenicians and Greeks. Later Hannibal Barca and his hordes from Carthage subjugated the area founding Carthago Nova, which today is the smart sea town of Cartagena.

Then, inescapably came the Romans and in the 5th Century the Visigoths (a German race) who subjugated all of Spain under Euric then to be replaced by the Moors in 711.

The lovely city of Murcia (then called Mursiya) was founded in 825 A.D by The Caliph of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman II. Founded on the site of an old Roman Colony there are still lots of Moorish features there not least in the very impressive City walls.

In the 11th century there was civil war & the Caliphate was comquered by local Spaniards to make an independent kingdom, which included (at its height) part of the modern counties of Almeria & Alicante. Calmer times followed until 1243 when Alfonso X of Castilla & Leon re-conquered Murcia and the surrounding Counties. Severe oppression forced the predominantly Moslem community to convert to Christianity. All 20 mosques were converted into Christaian churches.

The city was blessed with some very elaborate palaces, decorated churches and the crowning glory was the gorgeous rococo cathedral. All the prosperity was pretty much paid for by the blossoming silk and agriculture industries.

At the height of Murcia's popularity and influence Napoleon Bonaparte spoilt the party by sacking and looting the County in 1810. Then came an epidemic of plague followed by Cholera.. Then Murcia's fortunes declined until the last Century when Murcia only had to be a minor city. There was serious violence during the Civil War in 1936 and too many stunning monuments and churches were lost forever. Economic deteriation also occurred as the previously valuable silk market couldn't maintain it's competitiveness against the offensive of man made fibres.

In more recent times Murcia has been sustained by fruit farming and similar industries.

The latest thing in the chronicles of Murcia has been the building of 37 golf courses just now with plenty more on the way. Multi-billion pound Company Polaris World has invested drastically in Murcia and is even making all it's golf resorts water self-contained by creating clean water from the sea.

The financial welfare of Murcia County is assured.
