Understanding Satallite TV Basics

By: David C. Johnson

A satellite TV is composed of three basic parts. Each one serves a function and working together they bring they pick up the satellite signal, process it and present it to you on your TV screen to watch. You have seen the parabolic satellite dishes already. They are the round bowl shaped things that sit, mounted in peoples yards and on their houses.

They are alot smaller than they used to be and alot less expensive too. They are bowl shaped for a reason and that reason is that they catch and reflect back the signal to a device that is mounted a little ways out from the dish. If you look carefully the next time you see a satellite dish on someones house you will see the device right in front of the dish mounted on a leg to hold it there.

Its mounted at the very center of the dish to maximize the amount of signal it picks up. They work together like a basketball net and backboard. The signal is bounced off the dish and sent into the LNB converter much the same as a basketball bouncing off the backboard and going into the basket. The third part of the system is the receiver and it does several things.

Its the box that sits on top of your TV and you can point the channel changer at it and change the channels. The size of the satellite you need for your system is determined by the type of weather that you have in your area. If you buy your system in your area they should know exactly what size you need. Satellites rotate above the earth at its equator.

They rotate there for a reason and that reason is that they can stay in the same place there. They stay synchronized with the earth rotation there. If they were to orbit anywhere els this just wouldn't be possible. So your dish ends up pointed at the satellite and it picks up the signal day after day. The LNB converter that sits mounted out front of your system has its job to do and without it the system wouldn't function.

Your TV cable uses a different type of radio signal than is transmitted from the satellite. For quite a number of reasons the satellite transmits a different type of radio signal. The satallite signal has to travel through air for quite a long distance and the signal your TV uses travels through cable for a short distance. So The signal has to be changed or converted after it has been picked up by your dish and sent into your cable.

The LNB converter does this. The receiver is the third part of your system that sits on the TV. It sorts out all the information that comes to it through the cable and turns it into entertainment on your TV screen. It changes the signal yet again that comes down the cable into a signal that your TV uses. So all three parts work together to pick up a signal and change then send it through your cable then change it again and send it to your TV screen for you to see and enjoy.
