Wearing A Helmet Can Really Save Your Life

By: John Daniele

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there is a 35% great possibility that a motorcycle rider who is involved in an accident with an automobile will be injured or killed. This is a much higher rate that if two automobiles were involved in the same accident. The chances greatly decrease if the motorcycle rider is wearing a helmet. By wearing a helmet the motorcycle rider greatly decreases his chances of receiving a serious or fatal injury.

Motorcycle helmets for motorcycle riders has been made a requirement by law in some states but is still optional in several others. Many motorcycle riders will wear a helmet even if it is not required in the state because of the safety features it offers. If a helmet is fitted properly for the wearer then he is much more protected in an accident that a rider who has chosen not to wear a helmet. Safety for most motorcycle riders is the key ingredient in riding a motor cycle.

Motorcycle helmets offer more than just protection to your head area they also protect your face, mouth and ears. Not only are they great for protection but they also allow you the ability to have a hands free intercom system right in your helmet, making you able to communicate with other riders in your party. An intercom system is much better than attempting to scream at each other over the roar of your motorcycle and the vehicles around you.

Even if you would rather not wear a motorcycle helmet the amount of protection they provide might just win you over. Not to mention that there is such a wide range of styles, colors and protection levels offered that most riders just can't say no to wearing a helmet. Maybe you're a person who would rather be able to feel the wind of the open road touching your face instead of a helmet. Why not try a helmet that has an open face so you can still feel the wind but also be protected? For those who would rather have their face protected from rocks, sand or anything else that might fly your way while riding then you can choose a helmet with a face shield that flips down to cover your face.

Many motorcycle riders fear helmets because they think that the helmet will be uncomfortable to wear. In prior years that might have been the case but just as everything else motorcycle helmets have also advanced. They are not only made for protection now but also for comfort. Most helmets will have a foam or fabric interior making them much more comfortable, allowing you to wear them for longer lengths of time. Not only does the interior lining offer more comfort but it also offers the wearer more protection in the long run.

When shopping around for the right motorcycle helmet something to look at is the amount of protection factors the helmets provide. Many people assume that the most expensive helmet is automatically going to be the one that will offer the most protection and in some cases that is not true.

Motorcycle helmets might be bothersome to many riders but take into account that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that there is an estimated chance that 40% for motorcycle riders who do not wear helmets to suffer a serious head injury. If that isn't enough there is also a 15% chance that a rider in an accident who is not wearing a helmet will suffer a fatal head injury. Those facts are more than bothersome, they are reality.
