What Do Credit Repair Companies Do?

By: James Miller

To better help you to read this article, here are some definitions. A debt management company helps you re-organise your finances in order to see you out of debt. However, they generally charge you something for this service and they may propose applying for additional credit!

The National Debt Line is a national telephone helpline. It presents free, individual and private counsel to people on dealing with debt troubles in England, Wales and Scotland. Their helpline service is available all week long and there is also a website that has a great deal of valuable help and guidance on it. National Debtline is an element of the Money Advice Trust (MAT), which is a registered charity. The Money Advice Trust offers the public a structured approach to handling critical personal debt so that they'll get proper control of their financial affairs.

Experian is a chief UK credit reference agencies. Loan companies will refer to a credit reference agency to determine the qualifications of an prospective borrower derived from their financial history. This is referred to as a credit file. As a borrower, it's possible to request a copy of your report from Experian to know that all the statistics on it are truthful and that your financial details haven't been used illegally.

A credit score is an approach that would-be lenders use for appraising the credit eligibility of a customer. Loan companies will check the prospective client's credit report, the statistics within their credit application and the specific loan requested. Loan companies will then employ a numerical scoring system to guage the level of 'risk associated with lending to the potential borrower.

A 'CCJ' actually means County Court Judgement. This refers to a judgement established in a County Court connected to someone who is in debt to others (an individual or company) or a situation where they have violated the terms of a credit arrangement. A County Court Judgement will administer an appropriate instalment plan so that the debtor can give back what they have borrowed. County Court Judgement are a matter of public record and will affect the debtor's potential of accessing more credit for up to six years.

Credit repair companies advertise that they can free you from the problems associated with bad debt and can 'clean up' your credit report. You may have seen the ads saying: 'We can repair your credit!' Or: 'We can get you a mortgage/loan even if you have bad credit'.

However, you should be wary of companies that advertise this service. They may use illegal methods of 'cleaning' your report or may be using the service as front for what they really do - providing high interest loans.

These credit repair companies cannot remove county court judgements (CCJs) from your credit report. CCJs can only be removed once they have been discharged or if they have been incorrectly granted.

Anything that these companies say that they can do, you can do yourself - and at no cost.

Simple things like checking the accuracy of your credit file (contact one of the major credit reference agencies such as Experian, CallCredit or Equifax for a copy for around 2) may help in repairing your credit. This is because your credit file may hold some inaccurate data. So, if you find and put right inaccuracies; make sure that you are on the electoral roll; and remove any no longer valid financial connections, this will help repair your credit.
