Which Data to Back up?

By: James Walsh

Computers have pervaded all homes and has virtually become a repository of all the important documents we hold. In short, it has turned homes paperless.

Important Data Contained in My Home PC

Our home pc is used by all the members of our family and, needless to say, it contains all the information that is vital to us. Encoding data digitally has ensured us peace of mind. We no longer fear its misplacement (a regular occurrence when its papyrus counterparts were in use.).

Of the varied data that exists on our pc, I feel our family photographs are the most precious. These are memories of the happy times we spent together on various holidays, and on occasions of family get-together. These snapshots are not only priceless, they are also therapeutic. Just viewing images of the past conjures up happy memories that banish blues. Protecting them with a backup is important for, once lost, they can never be retaken.

My pc also contains a few e-books (authored by me) and varied articles I had written for different journals. Working in a publishing company, I telecommute and it is my pc that holds information I had garnered over years of effort. I require this written material for references, in my future endeavours too.

Another document which I regularly update is my personal dairy. This journal not only serves as a record of important events of the day. It is also a means that helps me set small achievable goals for the short term future, and this source serves as a benchmark for appraising my personal progress. This is important information that requires preservation.

The pc is a gadget used by all. The youngest member of my family (aged 7) has a virtual personal pet and it is fed online everyday. The teenagers of the house have downloaded and stored on the pc, games and other musical records. The system also contains details of properties and holdings, bank statements and records of online trading transactions (pertaining to the share market.) Finally, this information vault contains important emails we have received over the years.

In light of all the important data held in our desktop, it would not be an exaggeration if I were to state that the computer is the most important electronic equipment we have at home. However, while affirming thus, I also know that my pc will fail one day as it has a finite life span. It is only a matter of time before the precious information it contains would turn inaccessible.

Protecting Computer Data with a Backup

Many data backup options are available to safeguard the volatile digital information. These devices are designed to suit varying needs. After much deliberation, I decided to create a backup for my data by placing it in an online remoter server. By paying a monthly fee, I can directly upload all my work on to their server.

I had zeroed in on this method for all the other data backup methods necessitate constant maintenance effort. A regular backup of the data has to be created; the storage media should be appropriately labelled and placed in proper conditions, and its functionality should also be periodically checked.

The remote backup server would free me of all such hassles. The data backup software runs unattended and the information gets stored automatically. This backup data can be accessed from any place at any time of the day.

Moreover, living in an earthquake prone region that falls in the ‘fiery ring of Pacific,’ I felt the need of off-site placement of data.

Remote backup servers also ensure data protection from theft for it is transmitted and stored in an encrypted form. Extreme precautions are also taken to conserve information and keep them free of viruses and power failures. This backup method is well suited for small to medium business enterprises and home pc users.

Computers have permeated our life and have assumed such significance that it is hard to work without them. The data stored in the pc is extremely valuable and it necessarily necessitates protection. Though many backup devices are available, the remote backup option is much welcomed by some users for the many benefits it confers.
