Why Cross Tattoos Are So Popular

By: Simon Morris

More popular than ever, tattoos have found their way into the mainstream lives of most of the population. Once considered taboo, tattoos were usually placed on areas of the body where they could not be seen. Now tattoos are collected like fine pieces of art, and by masters of the needle called Tattoo Artists.

One of the most popular tattoos is the cross. Whether a simple design of two crossed lines or ornate and detailed designs with different colors and symbols, the cross has been drawn on more people than any other tattoo.

People who have decided to create works of art with their tattoos very often have some idea of what the entire design will look like before they get started. They will then take their time in having it completed usually based on either what their body can tolerate or on a money factor as some designs can be really expensive.

Cross tattoos have different meanings to different people and are generally associated with religion. For some, not only the design of the cross tattoo itself is attractive but it is the act of getting the tattoo (also known as 'getting inked') placed on their body.

Some people claim to reach a type of euphoria while they are receiving their tattoo and with every sting of the needle it only increases their desire to get more.

When it comes to cross tattoos there is obviously a strong connection with religion. Some people choose to get a cross design tattooed on themselves purely based on their strong beliefs. A tattoo is a very personal item to anyone who gets one and so it makes sense that religion could play an important role in the decision making.

Then there are those tattoos that belong to certain tribes or religious organizations. Some cross tattoos are actually not what they appear and if you look close enough, the crossed lines are actually crossed swords depicting something maybe a little darker. There are also those who may or may not have any religious beliefs but who will have the cross tattoo placed upside down on their skin.

Celtic cross tattoos are a very popular choice and have been for many years. The combination of its mysterious history and the elaborate designs one can choose from make it a preference for unique body art.
